The purpose of this piece is to give you more insight into who I am, why I’m here, and what to expect moving forward. If you’d like to know exactly what my newsletter will offer, check out my About section or, you know…
Who am I?
That’s a deceivingly tough question to answer, isn’t it?
Who am I?
At first glance, you’d think you’d answer it in a heartbeat. But after ten seconds pass, you spiral into a mental breakdown, questioning just who you are as an individual and your place in the universe.
Before I started this newsletter, I would answer that question by identifying what I do as a career and say, “I’m a writer.”
I was never happy with that answer.
Why?
Because it limits who I am as a human being. It restricts me to one way of thinking, one way of being, and I, no we as human beings are multifaceted and complex creatures that should never be restricted to one way of thinking. One way of being.
After I made that conclusion as I was creating my Substack I pondered and pondered, wondering just who I was as a human being. I didn’t want to limit myself to one noun so I decided to go with adjectives that would best describe who I am.
This is what I came up with…
Kind. Sensitive. Creative. Stubborn. Ambitious. Curious. Open. Empathetic. Humorous. Adventurous. A wee bit cray cray.
Jotting these adjectives down on paper made me wonder what these adjectives would look like in three to five nouns. And thus, I came up with…
Rebel
Dreamer
Empath
Artist
Misfit
These five nouns encompass who I’ve been, who I am, and who I will continue to be as a human being in the future.
That’s nice, Diego, you may be thinking, but can you tell us a little bit about your life story?
I would love to, my dear friends, I truly would, but if I do that then I’d end up writing a whopping 50,000 words.
Some of you may be thinking…
And others…
I’ll save my life story for another time. However, what I will do is tell ya’ll…
… What to expect moving forward
I said it before and I’ll say it again: I will never, ever restrict myself to one way of thinking. One way of being. I am a multifaceted, complex, ever-growing, ever-changing human being.
I’m a fucking onion with a thousand layers.
A Russian nesting doll that knows no end.
A man open to growth and change until my time in this world expires.
Yes, I talk about mental health, and share fiction on my Substack, but, I want to expand on the latter which is: to contemplate whatever the fuck I want.
What can you expect?
Anything and everything.
Final words
I like to end my pieces on an inspirational note that focuses on you.
Now, as you read my content, you’ll learn that I don’t like to tell people what to do or how to think. I mean, I fucking hate being told what to do, so, why the fuck would I tell you to do something, right?
That being said, I don’t want to tell you to do something but rather whisper words of encouragement.
The majority of this piece has been about striving to remain open to growth and change. To refuse to bind oneself to one way of thinking and being.
I don’t know who you are, where you come from, or what your beliefs are. Some of you might already be open to different perspectives and are addicted to change. If that’s the case, awesome, keep it up.
But if you’re not…
If you’re only bound to a political and economic point of view of the world.
Or the stern work ethic beliefs you learned from your parents that make no time for your mental health.
Then…
I urge you to take a leap and try something new. Not for me. Or the world. Or even your significant partner. But for you.
Your growth.
Your health.
Your life.
I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes said by the true Top G, Uncle Iroh from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
“It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If we take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale. Understanding others, the other elements, and the other nations will help you become whole.” — Uncle Iroh
